Synthetic Oil vs. Conventional Oil

Synthetic oil is exactly what it sounds like: oil made synthetically in a lab. Rather than using whole crude oil to produce the main components, the main components of synthetic oil are made using chemically modified petroleum. On the other hand, conventional oil (also known as standard or mineral-based oil) is refined from crude oil. The differences between these two kinds ;of oil don't end here. Mechanical experts say that synthetic oil has many benefits over conventional motor oil. According to experts, the main advantages of synthetic oil are because synthetic oil is designed to reduce engine wear and to reduce oil deterioration. Synthetic oil also helps reduce actual oil consumption and even helps improve fuel economy, conventional oil simply doesn't do this. How and why this happens is pure chemistry, kind of like the day you met your significant other (even if your significant other happens to be a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Aire.) It basically works like this: the molecules in synthetic oil are roughly the same size as each other, allowing the oil to use less energy to circulate throughout your engine. Molecules in conventional oil are not the same size as each other, so it takes more energy for the oil to circulate throughout your engine. More energy being used means more fuel consumption. You save fuel and money by using synthetic oil. The uneven molecule size in conventional oil can also cause the oil to evaporate more quickly, causing more oil to be consumed. If too much oil is consumed, then there won't be enough to go around your engine to properly lubricate it, potentially leading to engine damage. In other words, your engine will last longer when you use synthetic oil. Even though conventional oil is more organic, it doesn't mean it's better and besides, you're not putting it on your BLT. Synthetic oil generally lasts longer than conventional oil due to the fact that it is thinner and because it can resist temperature extremes better than conventional oil.

How Often Do You Need to Change Your ;Synthetic Oil?

If you're still using conventional motor oil, a good rule to follow is to change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. If you are using synthetic oil, you only need to change your oil every 5,000 miles. Some experts say that you can even go up to 7,000 miles before you need to change your synthetic oil. Synthetic Oil Myths

There are many myths floating around out there regarding synthetic oil. Here's a look at the top four myths surrounding synthetic oil. Myth: Switching to synthetic oil will make it so you can never switch back to conventional oil. This is one of the most common and persistent myths about synthetic oil – and is completely unfounded. You can switch back and forth between synthetic oil and conventional oil at your leisure and not worry about engine damage. ;However, it is advisable that you use the same oil for top ups if needed. Myth: It will cause engine damage if you use synthetic oil in an older vehicle. This myth is based on the idea that synthetic oil is lower in viscosity and therefore not as compatible with seals as conventional oil. Again, it is utterly false. Synthetic oils will improve the protection in older vehicle engines the same way they do for modern vehicle engines. Myth: You need to first break in your engine by using conventional oil before you start using synthetic oil. Again, there's no car maker out there that would make this recommendation. Many car makers' cars come from the factory with synthetic oil in their engines already. Myth: Using a synthetic oil can void your car's warranty..... This is generally ;false. Only some Mazda rotary engines specifically exclude the use of a synthetic oil.

Advantages of Using Synthetic Oil

Decreased oil evaporation Resistance to thermal breakdown, oil sludge problems, and engine oxidation Environmental benefits due to less used oil waste being generated Better fuel economy Better lubrication for cold weather starts Longer engine life Greater horse power Greater engine torque To summarize, synthetic oil is far superior to conventional oil for many reasons. The most important reason is of course the money you will end up saving when you make the switch to synthetic oil from conventional oil.
