Spring cleaning your home is a great way to remove clutter and bring it back to life. This year, why not include your vehicle in the task?

Your regular cleaning routine throughout the year is a great way to keep your home looking clean and tidy. However, it isn’t enough to keep all of the clutter and mess from accumulating. This is exactly what a spring clean is for, to remove clutter and improve the space.

Include Your Car This Spring Clean

Just as your house will experience clutter build up, so too will your car, leaving you with sluggish performance and a messy interior. Ed Welliver knows the importance of a well-maintained vehicle and has some basic, yet powerful, car-spring-cleaning tips to share.

Air Filter

Almost all motorists know that they have an air filter, largely because their mechanic charges for the replacement. And while air filters will eventually need to be replaced, you don't need to visit a mechanic to replace it. Check online for a tutorial or consult your owners manual for the best instructions suited to your vehicle. If this is the first time you have even thought about your air filter, let alone replacing it, don’t be nervous about the task. As you’ll see, it’s an easy one.

Battery

Despite its size, your battery is a powerfully important part of your vehicle. So important that, should it stop working while you are in the supermarket or at work, your vehicle won’t start when you return. The easiest way to inspect your battery is to look at it. Batteries are pretty simple by design, so there isn't much to look at. If you can see any build up or debris around the terminals and the cables, safely clean it away with a dry clean cloth. If you can see corrosion or it’s just apparent that your battery isn’t going to last much longer, consider replacing it while your vehicle is in the drive and not while you have a trunk full of melting groceries

Fluid Quality

It doesn’t matter if your vehicle is the brand new or the engine is the most advanced available, without a range of fluids and oils, your engine isn’t going to last too long. When checking your fluids, keep these points in mind:
  • If you top up throughout the year, take the opportunity to flush out and replace your fluids.
  • Clean the fluid containers if possible.
  • Check the condition and clean any accessible fluid lines.
  • If you spill oil, clean it before moving on.
  • Once you have finished, keep the leftover containers upright in your trunk or other storage space in your car.
  • Only use high-quality products.

Wheels

Your wheels and tires perform a crucial role in getting you from A to B. Despite this, this area of your vehicle rarely gets the attention it deserves. This spring clean, spend some time checking your tires and wheels, keeping these points in mind:
  • Don’t hurry the task. Take your time.
  • It’s best to perform the inspection outside in the bright sun so you can see better.
  • Check for lodged debris, cracks, soon-to-be punctures, or areas on your tire without any tread.
  • Adjust your tire pressure if necessary.
  • Thoroughly clean away any dirt, grime, and build up from your wheels and your tires.
  • While you are there, inspect the condition of your brakes.

Finally, the Interior

Last but not least, is the interior of your vehicle. When cleaning the interior of your car, remember that it’s a task which you only completely yearly, so be sure to allow enough time and perform a thorough job.
  • You need to remove everything from the car before you can start to clean, such as personal items, trash, and anything i the car’s storage spaces.
  • Your vacuum cleaner attachments can help you to reach more spaces, such as underneath the seats and where your pedals are located.
  • Wash any seat covers you have separately and ensure they are completely dry before reinstalling them.
  • Wash the carpet in your trunk.
  • A very damp clean cloth can help to remove grime and dirt from rubber seals.
